Our first dog was Martha. Aulin found her on a Chinese market someway out of Beijing. She was one of six puppies he bought spontaneously, most of all because her mother was slaughtered hanging from a hook at the market stall. Five of the puppies were taken by American farmers; Martha was the one we kept. And so we happened to have bloodhounds, fortunately. Unfortunately, we had no idea about what bloodhounds are, how they have to be educated and so on. We thought that it could not be that difficult, like with other dogs we knew. But we realized soon that this assumption was totally false. So we went to a dog training which worked outstandingly well. And we learned that Bloodhounds are not more complicated but somewhat different than other dogs. And, as it usually happens with things that are special, we fell in love. Because one bloodhound is not enough if you have ever fallen in love with them, we decided to get more and to start breeding; the more so as in Europe bloodhounds are rare, the few existing dogs are more or less all relatives to some degree and the European bloodhound population needed some fresh genes. So we got our dogs from the USA and started our breeding programme.
